Mobile Home Fire Leaves Savannah Woman Injured
SAVANNAH, GA (February 8, 2010) – A Savannah woman was rushed to an area hospital this afternoon after she was injured when fire broke out in her southside mobile home.
Just before 3p.m., Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters were dispatched to the Southside Mobile Estates, 10305 Middleground Rd., on a report of a structure fire. Responding firefighters observed heavy smoke filling the air of the neighborhood just south of Tibet Ave. and upon arrival, they encountered a fully-involved structure fire.
Because initial reports from neighbors indicated someone may still be in the home, firefighters initiated a rescue operation while battling the flames. As it turned out, both residents who were home at the time the fire started did escape the trailer. A 70-year-old woman was able to escape the fire without injury however, a 47-year-old woman sustained burns during the fire. She was treated on the scene by emergency medical personnel and then transported to Memorial University Medical Center. The extent of her injuries and her condition are unknown at this time.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the affected single-wide trailer, preventing it from extending to nearby homes. Firefighters say the majority of fire was localized to the living room area of the home however, the whole interior of the trailer sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. American Red Cross officials were on scene to assist the residents with alternate living arrangements.
